Those along with engine longevity, fuel economty and emissions. I am certain that factors like this went in to MB's decision on supercharger size, pully speed and boost pressure. So while you have high peak number the drivability sucks and turbo is so hugh it takes a long time to get spooled up. I have seen many 900 hp Toyota supra dyno charts where little power is made untill the last 1000 RPM before redline. The trick is to match the level of boost provided to maximize the shape of the power curve and the form of boost delievery. Smaller units in general need less RPM and cause less drag to produce boost pressure. That RPM peak is determined by the type of super charger and its size. So that they are really most efficient at a particular RPM. I know less about superchargers, but the principles are very similar.Ĭouple uniqe things about super chargers is that their output is determined in part by RPM. Big turbo can make big hp by flowing lots of air, but can be a pain on the street and have lots of lag before the get spooled up. ![]() You want a small turbo for quick response and low lag, but they can only flow so much air. Stock turbos tend to designed for certain power vs lag charatistics. The reason the bigger turbo in the Saab gave you more hp at lower boost was due to it the efficienty. The 88 Turbo S and 89 cars came with bigger hot side on the turbos allowing about 30 more hp for the same pressure. Nice thing about 944 Turbo's is that its pretty easy and cheap to add a chip and run boost to 15psi and get 250-280 wheel hp. Pretty good since they were rated at 247 at the flywheel. My 88 Turbo S is 100% Stock and puts 230 hp to the ground. ![]()
